TAG & RELEASE
The world's oceans are in trouble and a new paradigm needs to occur to conserve healthy fish stocks and angling opportunities for present and future generations. Gone are the days of looking at the oceans as an unlimited resource. TBF's Tag and Release Program was forged by anglers and captains who had the foresight to see the ocean in crisis. Today this program works to provide an important source of information to scientists with the goal of improving the knowledge base necessary to enhance long term sustainable management and conservation of billfish and other pelagic species. It also supports the analysis of socioeconomic data highlighting the importance of the recreational fishing and related tourism as compared to commercial fleets. However, it is only though the participation of anglers, captains and mates that TBF achieves these goals. Your participation is making a valuable contribution to realize a brighter future for the world's oceans.
Since its inception in 1990, TBF's Tag and Release program has been providing scientists and fishery managers with the following types of important data:
migration patterns age and growth rates stock structure
This data is used to assist in the development of stock assessments and billfish management policies. Every fish that is tagged, released and recaptured is one more piece in the puzzle of the mysterious lives of billfish.
