Through the Adopt-A-Billfish program, TBF supports satellite tagging technology to discover the behavior of billfish in their natural environment.

This program relies upon the "pop-up" satellite archival tags (PSATs), 5" cylindrical micro-computers with sensors programmed to measure and store water temperature, depth and light-based location data at predetermined intervals.

PSATs detach from the fish at a pre-set time interval, float to the surface and transmit stored information to the ARGOS Data Collection System onboard the NOAA Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellites (POES).

Data collected from these satellite tags can be used, along with data from traditional tagging, to assist in the conservation and management of billfish.
